    Our Easy-On Favorites

Different shoes solve different problems. Here's how they compare.

    Our top adaptive pick

    BILLY Footwear

A zipper runs around the shoe so the whole top opens wide, making it easy to get on and off. Made for kids and adults, and our go-to for anyone wearing an AFO brace.

    Hands-free

    Kizik

Step right in, no hands needed. The heel flexes down as your foot slides in and springs back into place, so there's no bending over and no laces to tie.

    Hands-free

    Skechers Slip-ins

Hands-free Skechers with a molded heel that holds its shape, so you can step in without touching your shoes. Styles change often, so ask us what's in the store.

    Clogs & Slip-Ons

Clogs from Dansko, Birkenstock and Haflinger, plus slip-on sneakers and shoes with hook-and-loop straps from many of our other brands.

Shoes That Fit Over AFO Braces

An AFO (ankle-foot orthosis) brace adds bulk around the heel and ankle, so it won't slide into most shoes. BILLY Footwear is our go-to for AFOs, for kids and adults. Its zipper runs around the shoe so the whole top opens up, letting you set your foot and brace in from above instead of squeezing them through a narrow opening.

    1. Bring the brace
Wear or bring your AFO and the sock you wear with it. We'll fit the shoes with the brace on.
    2. We fit the braced foot
A foot in a brace often needs more room than the other foot. We measure both and check the fit on each side.
    3. We make room
If a shoe has a removable insole, taking it out can free up extra space for the brace.
    4. Stand up and walk
We check that the heel sits down in the shoe and that nothing rubs at the edges of the brace.

We're shoe fitters, not doctors. If you have a new brace or questions about what you need, check with your orthotist or physical therapist, then bring their recommendations with you and we'll help find shoes to match.
